By the Stars Brown Vetrath

Impressed to Meri (Meridlyn) of High Reaches Weyr in October 2007

Dam: Ro's Shining Force of Justice Gold Rhadamanth
Sire: R'sul's Oath of Blood and Bronze Hesketh

Egg Name: Unhappily Ever After Egg
Egg Desc: Flecks of golden fairy dust float over a flurry of daydream colors - the pastel blues and purples of an enchanted castle, a rich green of the rolling fields, and the rusty red hue of dragon's fire. Yet, despite the seemingly perfect, fairytale setting, a gray pallor lingers over the shell of this large egg, dimming the golden gleam, casting the landscape into shadow, and leaving a sense of disappointment in its wake.

Mind Name: Tenacious Whispers
Mind Desc: Vetrath's voice is a rich baritone, his more emphatic statements punctuated with bright flashes of yellow rather than any increase in intensity. In fact he rarely shouts, a calm neutrality taking over his tone when his anger rises, enough that any on the receiving end know they are in trouble. In the rare times when he lets any emption show, his thoughts are tinged with a dusky red, his voice growing even softer than usual.

Hatching Message: Unhappily Ever After Egg falls silent finally, and for a moment that appears to be all that is going to happen. Finally the shell bulges horribly at one side, and a green field-like patch gives way to a dark brown foot. A moment later the rest of the shell disintegrates, dream fading into reality, and a By the Stars Brown Hatchling stands up from the ruins of the shell.

Hatchling Name: By the Stars Brown
Hatchling Desc:Faded beige forms a subtle base for this robust brown dragon, the colour darkening around eyes and mouth to give him an almost sunken faced look. His haunches are lean, toned, but oddly patterned -- waves of a darker chocolate colour streak across them giving him an illusory creased look all the way down to his almost black feet. His belly is likewise crumpled, its generous form dotted in places with tawny stars, which become more noticeable on his great wings. The wingsails are crowded with these tawny places, the colour soon taking over and enveloping each wing like a cloak. His long cane-tail could be said to finish his ensemble, for as his legs darken it instead pales to a decorative silvery tip.

Impression Message: Have the sands changed colour? Have the lights gone out? All of a sudden there's a chill and everything seem to fade from view. << Meri, attend me. >> A rich baritone voice echoes round the darkness in your head, << We have much to do. >> In a rush the world as it was returns, but there is an insistence that must be dealt with first, << I, Vetrath, have only one partner in this life. I trust you are up to the tasks I give you. >> The first needs no announcing, the intense pain in your stomach is hint enough.

Personality: Vetrath is an anomaly, a throwback to the times when Thread fell and needed leaders to be born. He is every inch a leader, a protector, but also a friend.

From the second he hatched he had a goal in life, to be the best, and nothing is going to sway him from that path. He is a people dragon, but rather than interacting he likes watching, listening, studying. If there is trouble then he will try to step in, though he like people to be kept at a distance until they need him or have earned his respect. Even other dragons, his clutchmates included, need to earn his friendship, but once that has been gifted they are assured of the same loyalty that he shows to you.

Vetrath runs to his own set of rules, he has such a strong belief in what is right and wrong, and may even go so far as to correct others if he feels they are straying. If anyone strays far enough as to become classed as trouble, you can guarantee he will keep a close watch on him or her. A good trait in a weyrlingmaster dragon, perhaps, but not so much as a delivery dragon. You may well find yourself going down routes you had not even considered simply because of his sheer force of will.

During weyrlinghood you may discover that he wishes to have extra practice on his own, taking you away from the others for times to simply work on things he feels are not yet perfected. Flying and feeding are easily mastered for him, and luckily there is not much need for you to be careful of him overeating - his belly may look large, but he is very careful to not get it any larger.

Perhaps because of him overthinking things, Vetrath is not the best of Search dragons unless he's had time to observe the person closely. It's the only time he ever seems to doubt his hunches. He still does his duty, bringing in several candidates for each clutch, but it's the one time you may get to see a flicker of a softer side. Likewise catching in flights will be a rare thing, kept to those who have earned his respect. He will dutifully chase any who rise, including the golds, but putting in an effort is another matter, for him sometimes the chase is all the thrill he needs and the catch an anticlimax.

Credits: Our theme this cycle was summer 2007 blockbusters, and Unhappily Ever After Egg was D'ana's interpretation of Shrek the Third. It was based on the idea of the 'bad guys' pursuing their dreams, which had never come true before.

Vetrath is based, as much as I can, on Javert from Les Miserables. You already know much more about him than I could say here, but I hope I managed to capture some of his more stubborn side. The name comes simply from a rearrangement of the letters of Javert's name with a -th stuck on the end. I could think of no better way to name him than after the character you requested.

The details in this inspiration are by no means set in stone - so feel free to mould them into a shape that pleases you. It's been a pleasure to create him for you. Congratulations and welcome to your new life at High Reaches.
